A Weekend in Strandhill, Sligo Ireland

I’ve been visiting Strandhill Sligo since I was a baby with my parents, and its still one of my most favorite parts of Ireland. Situated on the west coast, the surf town is small, but filled with activities, scenery, music and good for the soul. Check out my guide to a weekend in one of the best corners of Ireland. Think yoga, organic coffee, seaweed baths & surfing in the Atlantic Ocean …..ZEN.

Accommodation // Strandhill has a number of options depending on what you’re looking for. Everything from Self catering apartments, to b&b, from camp sites to Surf Hostels. I LOVE Camping & usually stay at the SurfnStay Lodge. Situated a 1 min walk from the shore front and close to all bars, shops & the beach. http://www.strandhillaccommodation.com

Surf // Make sure to give surfing a go when youre in Strandhill. The beach here is used by both professionals and beginners, with a number of surf schools in the village. I’d recommend “Sligo Surf Experience” owned & taught by local surfer Seamus Mc Goldrick. Based right on the sea front, you’ll be taught by both a professional and genuine Strandhill local! http://www.sligosurfexperience.com

Live Music // There are a number of spots In Strandhill for a pint of stout and good tunes, but my favorites are The Dunes Tavern & The Strand Bar. Both packed with live music every weekend & even have some of the biggest names in music playing there. Monday nights at The Dunes are one of the most popular nights of the week in Sligo, where they have their busy weekly open mic. You never know who you might see performing and can even book a slot for yourself! Get in touch http://thedunes.ie

The Market // Every Sunday 11-4pm in Strandhill Peoples Market comes alive with some of the finest craft makers in Ireland & the atmosphere is AMAZING. Be sure to grab a coffee from https://www.driftwoodcoffeecart.com when you enter the market and stroll around supporting local Irish makers. Jessies Coffee is awesome and roasted locally too!

Food // Last week myself and Kurt tried out the new restaurant “Stoked” which is situated above the Strand bar. Easily one of the best meals we’ve had in Ireland and on our travels around the globe. The restaurant is owned by a local and is all about trying out new things with awesome sharing plates. Book a table and check it out! https://stokedstrandhill.ie

Breathe // I’ve always felt so chilled leaving Strandhill. Mainly because all of the resources are in one street. Every time I visit the beach, I take a few hours to myself to use the Seaweed baths. So relaxing and good for the soul. After that I head over to Salt & Soul yoga studio, owned by one of my dearest friends Rachel. Rachel’s haven has a number of classes from yoga, to sound bath & meditation. Check out her site and book a class. https://www.saltandsoul.ie

Hike // After your weekend of dancing, drinking and eating, you’re going to need a good hike up the gorgeous (and famous) Knocknarea Mountain. Legend has it that Queen Maeve’s grave is situated right at the very top. The views are INSANE from the top and the ocean air will leave you feeling refreshed for the week ahead

GO STRANDHILL.
